How Do I Choose the Right Post-Op Nursing Package for My Procedure?

You've done the hard part: researched your surgeon, scheduled your procedure, and prepared yourself mentally for surgery day. But there's one decision that often gets overlooked until the last minute — who is going to take care of you when you get home?

At The Recovery Practice, we hear this question constantly from patients across Scottsdale, Phoenix, and Paradise Valley: "How much nursing support do I actually need?" The honest answer to choosing the right nursing package is it depends — and we helped narrow it down to (3) key points: 1. Your procedure 2. Your support system at home 3. How much peace of mind you want or need during recovery to keep the focus on you and ensure your results match your investment Here's how to think it through.

1.  Start with your procedure type

Not all surgeries recover the same way, and your nursing needs should reflect that.

Shorter, lower-complexity procedures — think liposuction (without drains or requiring an overnight stay in a surgery center), minor revisions, or outpatient procedures with same-day discharge — often just need a few hours of dedicated post-anesthesia support: help getting home safely, monitoring as the anesthesia wears off, and making sure you're stable before you're left on your own.

Single-area surgical procedures — breast augmentation, eyelid surgery, rhinoplasty — typically benefit from a full day of care. You're more mobile than you might expect, but you're also groggy, sore, and not in a position to be managing medications or watching for complications by yourself. You may feel best on your first day before the anesthesia wears off and swelling sets in.

Combination or higher-complexity procedures — mommy makeovers, tummy tucks paired with other work, body contouring after weight loss — usually call for multiple days of hands-on support. These recoveries come with drains, compression garments, restricted mobility, and a higher symptom-monitoring burden in the first 48–72 hours, when complications are most likely to develop.

Major reconstructive or extended-recovery surgeries — larger combination procedures, certain reconstructive cases — are where a full week or two of consistent nursing care makes the biggest difference, both clinically and emotionally.

2.  Then factor in your support system

A procedure isn't the only variable. Two patients having the identical surgery can need very different levels of support depending on life circumstances:

  • Do you have a partner, family member, or friend who can be hands-on for the first 24–72 hours? If not, professional coverage during that window matters more.

  • Do you have young children or pets who need care while you're recovering? Drains, dressing changes, and pain management get a lot harder when you're also responsible for someone else.

  • Do you live alone, or in a multi-story home? Stairs, kitchens, and bathrooms all become bigger considerations after surgery than they seem beforehand.

  • How are you with medical tasks? Some people are comfortable managing their own drain output and wound care with a little guidance. Others want a nurse physically present for every step.

3.  Your peace of mind built into our packages, at a glance

We built our service tiers around these exact decision points, so you're not guessing. Each package can be tailored to you with additional resources such as optimal meal preparation, transportation, and connecting you with therapy support services your surgeon recommends:

  • Essential Recovery (4 hours) — Immediate post-anesthesia monitoring and safe transition home. Ideal for shorter procedures or as a bridge before a friend or family member takes over.

  • Elevated Recovery (24 hours) — Round-the-clock coverage through that critical first day, when nausea, pain, and disorientation are at their peak. We can spend part of this time educating your caregiver or family member, at a safe pace, how to care for you properly before they take over.

  • Signature Recovery (3 days) — Covers the highest-risk window for most surgical complications, with daily wound and drain management, medication oversight, and hands-on comfort care.

  • Gold Standard (7–14 days) — Comprehensive, extended support for major or combination procedures, carrying you from the operating room through the early weeks of healing.

When in doubt, ask your surgeon

The single best resource for matching a package to your procedure is a conversation between your surgical team and your nursing team. Every surgeon has a sense of which of their patients tend to need more support, and we work directly with offices across the Valley to align our care with their post-op protocols.

If you're not sure which tier makes sense for you, reach out. We'll walk through your procedure, your home situation, and your comfort level, and help you land on the package that actually fits — not the one that sounds the safest on paper.
