How Much Does Private Post-Op Nursing Cost in Scottsdale?

6 min read

If you're planning surgery and looking into in-home nursing, you've probably already searched for a price. That's a smart place to start. Recovery is an investment, and you deserve to know what you're getting before you pick up the phone.

The honest answer is that the cost of private post-op nursing depends on your procedure, your support at home, and how much time you want a nurse with you. Two patients having the same surgery can need very different levels of care. For that reason, we build every care plan around the person rather than a price list, and we go over pricing on a free consultation call.

Below, we explain how our care is structured, what affects the cost, and what to ask any post-op nursing provider so you can compare your options with confidence.

How our post-operative care packages work

At The Recovery Practice, care is structured in two ways:

custom hourly care and reserved multi-day packages.

Custom hourly care

Some patients want a registered nurse for a set block of time, such as the first night home, a few hours after discharge, or a visit to check drains and incisions. Hourly care is built around your schedule and your procedure.

If you decide you'd like more time once you're home, additional hours can be added, subject to nurse availability. Letting us know as early as possible gives you the best chance of keeping the same nurse and the schedule you want.

Reserved packages: 24 hours, 3 days, and 7 days

For patients who want continuous peace of mind, we offer 24-hour, 3-day, and 7-day packages. With these, your nurse is reserved for you for the entire booking period. That time doesn't go to anyone else.

How you use that time is up to you. Some patients want their nurse right there the whole time. Others prefer a little privacy once they're settled and would rather have their nurse on-call and ready to come back when needed. Either way, your nurse is yours for the length of your booking.

What does “on-call” mean? It means your nurse is always nearby and available by phone whenever you need them. When you call, you reach your nurse, not a service, and that responsiveness is what concierge care is all about. We factor in your recovery location, but most often we can be there within 15 to 30 minutes of your call. That might be for help with a shower, meal prep, or a second look at something, or simply because you've decided you'd rather have us back by your side. Your time is designed around you.

What affects the cost of post-op nursing

Hours of care

The amount of time a nurse spends with you is the biggest factor. A single visit, one overnight shift, and a full week of reserved care are very different commitments.

Overnight vs. daytime care

The first night after surgery is often when patients and families feel the most uneasy. Pain medication schedules, getting up to use the bathroom, drain output, and nausea don't stop at bedtime. Many patients choose overnight care for that reason. It's often the part of recovery that gives everyone the most reassurance.

Your procedure

Recovery needs vary a lot by surgery. A single procedure may need less support than a combined one, like a mommy makeover. Surgical drains, compression garments, mobility restrictions, and fall risk after knee or hip replacement all shape how much hands-on care makes sense.

How many days you need support

Most of the heavy lifting in recovery happens in the first 24 to 72 hours. Some patients want support through that window. Others, especially those recovering alone or from more extensive surgery, prefer care through the first week.

Where you're recovering

We care for patients in Scottsdale, Paradise Valley, Phoenix, and surrounding areas. If you're traveling to Arizona for surgery, our [Fly-In Program] is designed to support you from arrival through your return home.

What's included in your care

Every patient with The Recovery Practice is cared for by a registered nurse. We don't use aides or caregivers. Depending on your needs, care may include:

  • Medication management and timing

  • Pain and nausea monitoring

  • Surgical drain care, emptying, and output tracking

  • Incision and dressing checks

  • Vital signs and early recognition of complications

  • Help with mobility, bathroom trips, and fall prevention

  • Communication with your surgeon's office when needed

  • Clinical documentation of your recovery

Why private post-op nursing costs more than a caregiver

It's fair to wonder why a registered nurse costs more than a home aide or having a family member stay with you. The difference is clinical judgment.

A registered nurse is trained to tell the difference between normal post-op swelling and something that needs your surgeon's attention. We also know when a fever, a change in drain output, or new pain is worth a phone call. Caregivers and loved ones play an important role in recovery, but they aren't trained to make those calls. With an RN, you and your surgeon both know someone qualified is watching.

Is post-op nursing covered by insurance?

Private post-operative nursing is private-pay and is not billed to insurance.

[If applicable: some patients ask about HSA or FSA funds. We recommend checking with your plan administrator about eligibility.

How to choose the right level of care

Here are a few common examples:

  • You're having a breast augmentation, and your partner is home with you. A nurse for the first night, or for a few hours after you get home, may be all you need.

  • You're having a tummy tuck with drains. A 24-hour or 3-day package gives you support through the hardest part of recovery, including drain care and getting up safely.

  • You're recovering from a mommy makeover with little ones at home. A multi-day package lets you rest while a nurse handles your care.

  • You're having a knee or hip replacement and live alone. Reserved care through the first several days helps with mobility, medications, and fall prevention.

  • You're flying in for surgery. A 3-day or 7-day package means you're never navigating recovery alone in an unfamiliar place.

Not sure what fits? That's exactly what the consultation call is for. We'll talk through your procedure and your home setup, then help you decide.

Questions to ask any post-op nursing provider

Whoever you choose, these questions are worth asking:

  • Are your nurses registered nurses (RNs), and are they licensed in Arizona?

  • Will you communicate with my surgeon's office if something comes up?

  • What happens if I have a concern overnight?

  • Is my nurse reserved for me, or shared between patients?

  • What's included, and what costs extra?

  • Can I add hours if I need more support?

Frequently asked questions

How much does an overnight post-op nurse cost in Scottsdale?

It depends on the length of care, your procedure, and your needs at home. We provide a personalized quote during a free consultation call.

How many days of post-op nursing do I need after a tummy tuck?

Many patients choose support through the first 24 to 72 hours, when drains, pain, and mobility are most challenging. Your surgeon's guidance and your support at home help determine the right length.

Do I need a nurse after knee or hip replacement?

Not everyone does, but in-home nursing can be especially helpful if you live alone, have fall risk, or want help with medications and mobility during the first few days home.

What if I need more hours than I originally booked?

Additional hours can be added, subject to nurse availability. We recommend reaching out as early as possible.

Is my nurse with me the entire time on a multi-day package?

Your nurse is reserved for you for the full booking period. You can have them with you the whole time or on-call if you'd like some privacy.

Can I book post-op nursing if I'm traveling to Scottsdale for surgery?

Yes. Our Fly-In Program supports patients coming from out of town.

How far in advance should I book?

As early as possible once your surgery date is set, especially for multi-day packages. During the fall and winter months our typical lead time is between 6-8 weeks.
